Brilliant mind, and unengaging writing. Hard to plow through this classic of queer theory, but, I'm told, it's worth it.
Reading it seems dated now but it's such a classic, anyone interested in gender studies should have a copy of this book... even though it's almost impossible to read. The cover has a pleasing rubbery/matte finish too.
I did not give this book 5 stars because (1) often I found Butler not clearly expressing her own ideas and opinions as opposed to weaving too much into the accounts she gave of others and (2) her position is not clearly cognizant of its own premises. Specifically, Butler is taking to task the issue of the subject, subject-object dualism, and issues of power. However, her work presumes that only one theory of the subject is possible, that it requires subject-object dualism--which she rejects--and her theory of power is unclear and messy. She wants to get rid of the idea of a "SUBJECT" and leave room for agency, in the possibilities that exist between the different ways people are constructed through different knowledges. Yet, the way she gets rid of the subject entails that nothing exists to be free, to have agency. IMHO this analysis needs more subtlety here.It also needs to be clear about how the rejection of modern subjectivity goes hand in hand with the rejection of subject-object dualism. Do other forms of subjectivity--or more importantly agency--exist outside of subject-object dualism.In short she does not question the presumptions of the Nietzschean-Foucaltian genealogy. Thus, she leaves herself open to legitimate attacks.Is the book worth reading--YES! Butler's analysis raises great questions and challenges for traditional approaches to subjectivity. Yet, the limitations are very strong because they presume too much.
This is one of the most important texts that I have ever read. Life changer. Butler's writing is simultaneously complex, rigorous, and accessible.
This book is very dense and difficult to get through. However, if you stick with it, you'll be glad you did! Butler presents very compelling arguments about gender, sexuality, and gender construction/performance, that will definitely alter the way you think about gender.
Good book
Butler is of course incredibly thoughtful and intelligent, and an important read for anyone interested in gender theory/performativity/feminist studies. However, this particular edition had an annoying number of typos; I'm not sure if it was proofread.
Great ideas but very hard to follow. The writing style is one that I don't care for.
