For the last six weeks, I have been eating/sleeping/breathing alongside this book. Despite owning a dip pen for over three years, I struggled to make any progress toward the 'modern calligraphy' style I wanted to learn.I finally saw an online comment where a pious experienced calligrapher pointed out that 'duh, it's all based on Copperplate so how can you expect to freestyle without learning the basics?' Well, this was news to me, but at last I found a place to start.This book seemed overwhelmingly thorough when I received it but I resolved to take it slow. I did pages and pages of practice drills before even attempting a letterform. After about two weeks and many hours of practice, I moved on to lower-case letters and did alright--all those drills were teaching me about slant and the proportions and starting a little muscle memory in my hand.I've got a long way to go, but if I put in another hundred zillion practice hours in I might get somewhere.Products available on Amazon that hugely helped this beginner:Zebra G nib (10-pack)Sumi ink (I like the one in the green bottle)T-40 pen holder
This book is a must have for the new calligrapher. It shows the various letters, but also gives variations on some of the letters. It is an invaluable resource. One final tip. I took my book to a local Fed Ex/Kinko's and had a spiral binding placed on it. That way I can open it up flat when I am working on my calligraphy and need to reference a letter. In fact I do that to all my craft/instructional books that I use a lot.
Very impressed with the detailed instructions. Ms. Winters is a fine technical writer as well as artist, making this easy to understand. I am a first time calligraphy student. In just a couple weeks I have learned the all the minuscules and some of the majescules. I am relying solely upon this book to teach myself, and have not attended any classes. Not only are there examples of exactly how to form the letters, but there are examples of common errors of what NOT to do. This is a great safeguard against learning the wrong way, if you have nobody around to critique your work.
This book is going to be a great addition to my card making. So many times I look for just the right rubber stamp, with the right quote that doesn't exist. Now, that has become past tense. I do have a background in calligraphy, but it has been awhile. I thought this book would be over my head, but that is not going to be the case. This book is even good for a begnner. Why not learn with the best type of calligraphy from the beginning.This came book through Switzerland post and was here faster than my mail from Texas to Seattle.
Wow this book is very detailed! But then again I am a person who likes to know the how and why of it as so that when I do something, it makes sense so I'm reallyenjoying this book. After a month my writing has become quite lovelyand doesn't look like the crap they each you in school! It took my hand the entire month to get over the cramping and pain pretty much due to relearning how to use a pen instead of typing or texting. That's something we don'tthink about anymore.
As my first book, This is the one I wanted. Takes you from the very beginning, explains pens, nibs, ink and paper. Everything you would need. I can't wait to finish this book. First lessons in and I am already improving.
